Ideas

I've been seeking inspiration... hoping for an idea that would help me earn money to add adventure and stability to my life and the lives of those in my family. Jason has a great job with lots of respect, seniority, and security, and we've always been very frugal. We have no debt apart from our house payment. However, I tend towards a good deal of restlessness and having been a career woman in the past, I feel pretty frustrated by the tiny amount I contribute to our family finances through my little teaching gig.

I've thought I might try to write for a living, but I really need to take some classes to polish up, and I'd need more time than I currently have available to keep up with the demands of a money-generating blog. Besides, I've always preferred to write toward genuine inspiration and out of a heart to help. Writing to earn money just feels like it might conflict with the sincerity behind the words. I prefer to teach... to add value to the lives of others through genuine contact with solid and useful information. If I could teach through my writing, well, that would be an interesting endeavor.

I've had a lot of challenges to my stubborn way of thinking lately. I'm finding myself frustrated by the realization that I've spent a lot of time defining myself by pointing out to the world all the things I'm not, but not living in the reality of the things that I am... the values and passions my life reflects. That might be because I'm still really figuring those things out.

I'm a product of some major family enmeshment. I'm still struggling to find out what my real feelings and desires are... who I'm meant to be. I think that changes as we travel through life, but I need some core stability that I simply don't seem to have.

I've spent a lot of time throwing around phrases like, "I'm not a yoga girl."... "I'm not all that into shopping."... "I'm not a selfie girl."... "I'm not a salesperson or spokesperson."..."I'm not into pop culture or princesses or Barbies or Disney or slang..." and so on and so forth. But who am I? To say that I'm experiencing an identity crisis right now would be a serious understatement.

Who am I?

Lately I've been asking myself that question more and more often, just trying to connect with the little girl who spent a lot of time alone with books and a journal... the girl who always felt weird and not quite good enough to fit... the girl who didn't feel valuable enough to excite love or admiration in others.

I'm trying to find the girl that used to pretend to play the piano at the living room window sill... the baby that tried to sing along with the radio... the little girl who won a school-wide creative writing and art contest in elementary school with an essay on and landscape of New Zealand... the "shrimp" with the blonde braid who beat all the boys every year in the running contests on field day... the girl who sat wide-eyed staring out the car window just waiting to enter the pine belt on I-45 on our yearly trip to see Uncle Billy, Aunt Cheryl, and Debbie in Spring, Texas... the girl in love with tall trees and bright flowers... the mysterious moon and distant stars.

Confusion comes when we try to be and do it all to gain some acceptance that might never come. And sometimes we have to be open to things we thought we weren't to find the person we truly are... because other people... people meant to inspire, guide, and love us actually occupy those spaces that we're reluctant to go to. Relationships we're meant to give to and receive from are in those overlapping places.

I know what the Bible says I am, but how do I live that practically? How do I allow myself the permission to be the person God made?

Wise counsel has come from some pretty odd places lately. Some people in my life have really surprised me. I sat down with a friend the other day and personally thanked her for being so open about her struggles so that I could feel the freedom to do some things I've needed to do for myself and for my loved ones for a long time. And it's all got me thinking that, to reach some goals and to make some things happen, I really need to branch out.

Because sometimes you have to take medicine to deal with life. Sometimes resistance takes more energy than just trying something new for the first time to see if you'll benefit (yoga... ahem). Sometimes the people that aren't exactly like you have some wisdom for areas in your life that you just didn't see coming.

Here's hoping the New Year brings some new opportunities for all of us to grow, exceed ourselves, and make some big dreams and ideas a reality!

Happy Pills

Despite some inner conflict, here is another link to a post at the other blog. I've done some writing at the other blog over the past month or so, but I haven't put it here. It's uncomfortable to be so open with this stuff.

Therapy sessions are good, but hard. They wear me out, sometimes for several days.

I think what's hardest is seeing the looks on my counselor's face... learning that I've been carrying some heavy stuff for decades without asking for help.

I don't mean to seem like a narcissist here. My therapist assures me that narcissists don't see counselors and they don't ask themselves if they are narcissists. I hope she's right. :o) I've come a little too close to suicide situations though... and I have had my own struggles with self-inflicted physical pain carried out to numb intense emotional pain. I still have very little understanding of it all.

I've put this out there before, but if my own transparency keeps one person from going down that path (even it if exposes me to ridicule), then it's totally worth it to bring shame to myself and to this little piece of my own story.

Here's the link if you're interested. I've attempted to keep it short and to the point...

Let Yourself Be Loved

I don't know how much sense this will make. I write to understand and I still don't completely get it. This post has been evolving in my heart for months now. And maybe it wasn't ready to come under anyone else's eyes quite yet, but I had to get it down today or not function at all. All I can do with this pain is pray that someone else will benefit from it. I don't know how I feel about this word combination, but it's a "precious pain". It's drawing me closer to Him. And if you're experiencing this type of pain too, I pray it does the same for you.

The post is at the other blog. Here's the link...

A Little Volunteer

Re-posting a short little something I wrote for Melanie on her birthday several years ago. I put it up on the other blog because, eventually, I hope to put everything over there. I needed to clean that post up because I want to save it for her, and I wanted to add her pink cosmos to the featured image at the top of the post. Those pink flowers volunteer somewhere in our garden every year since she and I planted them in a portion of a bed in our veggie garden.

She loves pink. :o) And we love her.

The last couple weeks we've encountered a resurgence of little symptoms of past trauma in her. Possibly, she's picking up on our anxiety over the current crisis in our world and our anxiety over her and her brother. She's also been to the doctor multiple times for another mysterious health situation that we pray will resolve itself before long.

Despite all the hardship she's faced in her short life, she's been a HUGE example to me of how to face adversity with a smile on your face and a song in your heart. When I grow up, I want to be like my daughter.

Cloudy with a Chance of Insight

If you're reading, I'd like to ask for your help.

I'm learning to really hate this blogging bit. It feels a lot like negotiating for a vehicle. Those things seem entirely unrelated, I know. But hitting the publish button and sitting in a salesperson's office at a car dealership are exactly the same thing to my heart. And they produce almost exactly the same amount of indigestion.

I don't know what to do with that, nor with the compelling need to write. I really don't want any of this to be about me or my feelings. I want the words that come to be a direct result of prayer. I want God to fill the page. Specifically, I need to know where the writing should find its focus... or if I should write at all.

After last night's 2.5 hours of sleep, I woke to this. "My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips. When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches." ~Psalm 63:5-6

Again, I don't know what to do with any of this. Putting it out there feels really weird/off/hard to me. If you feel compelled to share, the link is below. I'm good with that. Right now, however, I'm personally limiting the people I share this with to the established list on this blog and a couple other people who have already agreed in prayer with me over all this. I don't want this to be about self-promotion (and for some reason it feels that way), but I also don't want to place limits on the way the Lord moves the hearts of others.

Thank you!
:o) Jackie

A Heart's Tenebrae

I'm placing an old post on the newer blog. I've had the words in my mind again for some time, but have wrestled with re-posting it. As much as I tend to edit myself, I can't bring myself to do much to this one. It was one of those rare moments when the "flash" came at almost the exact moment I could actually capture it and give it the form of words on the page. I haven't decided whether or not I'll post this to Facebook, but you're welcome to share if you wish.

Brightness and Shadow

I'm grieving and processing tonight so that hopefully I'll be able to mostly function for my family tomorrow. Read or ignore. I won't be checking up.  😊

There's absolutely nothing that's particularly poignant here... just a lot of sentiment and heartache. There's no concern that people will forget Daniel Maberry anytime soon, so my aim isn't really to memorialize him here, but, even though I talk a bit about pride in the post, there's definitely some pride in my heart over the fact that I got to be good friends for a while with this good man whose heroes were Jesus Christ and Tom Landry.

When I know someone is a believer, I refuse to talk about them in past tense after they've gone on. Our brother is still very much alive... just hanging out in a place we can't be quite yet. Praise be to our Great God for that reality.  If those statements confuse you and you want to know more, I'd love to talk with you about it!

Fresh Semesters

There's another new post on the other blog. I need to update this one with family happenings, but my mind is fully into planning, clean out, and organization mode right now, so I'll leave that for another day. Next up... the sock drawer.

I also added a paragraph to the most recent post "Look Up". It's a paragraph that includes the thoughts that actually generated that post, but since it was 3 am when that post hit the blogosphere, it's not surprising that I managed to completely leave it out. I'm good at that. 😕

Happy New Year!
